The Fallen Officer:
Sergeant Elio Diaz, 40, was shot and killed during a traffic stop shortly after 3:00 p.m. at 4968 Tamiami Trail in Charlotte Harbor.
The Circumstance:
Diaz stopped a white pickup truck at a Chevron gas station in Port Charlotte after discovering its license plate was flagged for financial responsibility suspension, indicating a lapse in insurance.
During the stop, the driver pulled out a rifle and fired at Sergeant Diaz before fleeing. When he was found a few miles away, the suspect reached for his rifle and was shot and killed by deputies.
Sergeant Diaz had served with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office for over 11 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Upon hearing about the tragic line of duty death of Sgt Elio Diaz, Give Blue Hope reached out to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department. Give Blue Hope spoke with Lt Williams, Charlotte County Sheriff Department family laison.
After speaking with Lt Williams and reviewing the incident information, Give Blue hope was privileged in providing the family a charitable gift of money. Sgt Diaz left behind a wife and 4 children.
